Working as researcher at Delft University of Technology
in collaboration with professor Kaspar Jansen.&#38;nbsp;

To be presented at the E-Textiles conference 2024, in Berlin on November 20th 2024.&#38;nbsp;

We developed the prototype from 
proof-of-concept to a pre production stage.
	The goal of the project was the development of a 3D knitted sensor strap which measures the heart rate and breathing frequency.

In currently available products, the breathing frequency is most often derived from the heart rate signal. We developed a sensor strap that measures the breathing frequency in a more direct, and more accurate manner: through a knitted sensor.

	As researcher I was in charge of the product developement, working mostly autonomous but in close contact with the professor K. Jansen, and the collaborating partners such as 2M Engineering and Knitwear Lab.

This encompassed literature research into the state-of-the-art knitted sensors, material sourcing, knitting prototypes and evaluating these systematically, setting up a validation study with participants, and processing and evaluating the resulting data.

Freelance Softgoods Product Developer for Bolster Softgoods
	My tasks as freelance Softgoods Product Developer at Bolster Softgoods is to collaborate with a soft robotics company to improve their product, mainly focussing on the soft-side. I divide my time in the phases of ‘analysis’, ‘conceptualizing’, and ‘developing’.

I set up various user studies, conducted interviews user’s homes, to dive into the user journey. This led to not only a redesign of the soft-side, but also the electronics and user-interaction.To prototype and produce the design, collaboration with various factories in Europe and Asia are initiated. Sourcing foam- and fabric materials, finding suitable parties to collaborate with, modelling in CAD software are all part of my tasks.

The project is on-going and the NDA prevents me from presenting more details.

In the collaboration with platform The Possibilities and photographer Mark Loopstra, I designed a collection of 28 unique, 3D knitted scarfs.

The designs are inspired by the intriquate structure of stalagmites and bones. Both natural elements are gradually shaped by their environment, responding and adapting to the external forces.

Textiles
surround us all. Typically, textiles are manufactured in large panels through
weaving or knitting, then cut and sewn together to make our garments. Knitting,
particularly 3D knitting on an industrial machine, can shape directly, thus
saving material and reducing labour. 
Knitting allows for a wide range of
material properties and aesthetics and can be integrated with other stiffer
materials. The lightweight nature of the knitted fabric, combined with a
structural material, allows for the development of easily transportable,
large-scale objects while maintaining the advantages of 3D knitting. 


How does 3D knitting 
redefine object-making? &#38;nbsp;


	Form follows material

	
The
project objective is to explore the opportunities and limitations of 3D
knitting through the design of a chair. 
The research followed a Material Driven Design approach, meaning the design of
the chair stems from the discovered characteristics of knitting through sample
making and reflecting. Form follows material. &#38;nbsp;

The chair shows we can rethink
 current textile production methods to design lightweight, adaptable in
 material properties, deployable, industrially produced, large scale objects,
 minimizing the material waste and labour intensity. &#38;nbsp;
  The chair is a textile-hybrid structure in which the tension of bent tubes balances the stretchable
knitted textile.


	Deployment and reconfigurationThe chair deploys by releasing the attachments of the two overlapping panels. Reconfiguring the panels results in eight different aesthetics. 
The colours and material expression are adaptable to the user needs and wishes.

Future research objectives
More in-depth research is required
 into the behaviour of 3D knitted textile-hybrid structures, which cannot be
 predicted through computational modelling yet because of the complex physics
 of the yarn material, loop formation and internal frictions. The development
 of textile-hybrid objects is thus a process of trial-and-error. Research into
 modelling of 3D knitted textiles can broaden the range of opportunities to
 utilize the method for large scale objects, and reduce the material usage and
 streamline the production process.

	Knitted Jeans&#38;nbsp;
	
In collaboration with the municipality of Rotterdam, exhibited at De Zachte Stad.


The textile industry is massively environmentally polluting. Long pieces of fabric are knitted or woven, and then cut to the right shape to sew it back together to make our garment. High quality material is lost and disgarded as waste. This is the case with a pair of jeans made from the well-known strong, woven, blue denim fabric. Knitting has the advantage that it can be shaped directly, greatly reducing waste material. 
 

Can we knit denim?

	Denim fabric is exceptionally strong and durable due to its weaving structure and the cotton yarn. The fabric is breathable, feels soft, and can vary in thickness.

During my research, I compared many different materials and knitting structures on the tensile strength, the "strength," of denim fabric. It turned out that certain knitted structures are very comparable to denim. 
An additional advantage is that knitted fabric usually stretches, eliminating the need for elastic to make stretch jeans. The Knitted Jeans is a representation of this research.

The knitted trouser parts exhibit typical characteristics of jeans: the small extra pocket at the front, the 'rivets' at the edges of the pockets, the shape of the back pocket, the belt loops, the wide seams, and the yoke on the back panel. However, it doesn't look like a 'real' pair of jeans. With this knitted 'jeans,' I question the aesthetics of our clothing. If we want to make the textile industry more sustainable, we will need to change the way we make clothing. Will our clothing then look different too? Do we want that? Are we willing to dress differently if it makes the world a bit more sustainable?

Gebreide spijkerbroek
	In samenwerking met Gemeente Rotterdam, onderdeel van de tentoonstelling De Zachte Stad. Te zien vanaf 28 september 2023.&#38;nbsp;


	De textiel industrie is gigantisch milieu vervuilend. We gebruiken lang niet alle stof die wordt geproduceerd. Lange lappen stof worden gebreid of gewoven en daarna wordt er de juiste vorm uit geknipt om het weer aan elkaar te naaien tot onze kledingstukken. Hierbij gaat een deel van het materiaal verloren. Zo ook bij een spijkerbroek, gemaakt van de welbekende sterke, gewoven, blauwe spijkerstof.

 Breien heeft het voordeel dat het ook direct in vorm kan, waardoor minder materiaal verspild wordt.&#38;nbsp;


Kunnen we dan niet ook een spijkerbroek breien?

Spijkerstof is erg sterk en onverwoestbaar door de weefstructuur en de katoenen draad waarvan het gemaakt is. De stof ademt, voelt zacht aan, en kan in dikte verschillen. 

Tijdens mijn onderzoek heb ik vele verschillende materialen en breistructuren vergeleken met de trekkracht, de “sterkte”, van spijkerstof. Hieruit bleek dat bepaalde gebreide structuren zeer vergelijkbaar zijn met spijkerstof. Een bijkomstig voordeel is dat de gebreide stof meestal rekt, dus er is ook geen elastiek meer nodig om een stretch jeans te maken. De Gebreide Spijkerbroek is een verbeelding van dit onderzoek.


	De Gebreide Spijkerbroek heeft de typische characteristieken van een spijkerbroek: het kleine extra zakje aan de voorkant, de ‘spijkers’ aan de randen van de zakken, de vorm van de achterzak, de riemlussen, de brede naden, de pas op het achterpand. Toch ziet het er niet uit als een ‘echte’ spijkerbroek. Met deze gebreide ‘spijkerbroek’ bevraag ik de aesthetiek van onze kleding. Als we de textiel industrie willen verduurzamen, zullen we kleding op een andere manier moeten gaan maken. Zal onze kleding er dan ook anders uit gaan zien? Willen we dat wel? Zijn we bereid om ons anders te kleden, als dat de wereld een stukje duurzamer maakt?

Atelier internship
May - August 2020

Interning at the atelier of the Dutch Haute Couture designer Iris van Herpen in Amsterdam.&#38;nbsp;
The daily tasks were sewing the dresses of the new collection and custom dresses for clients, photographing for new fabric prints, assisting during film shoots, and much more.&#38;nbsp;


	“Transmotion”&#38;nbsp;
During the COVID-pandamic, the Paris Haute Couture Week 2020&#38;nbsp; is exhibited through an online video, presenting the Transmotion dress. It was my responsibility to finalize the dress on time for the video shoot, working together with and managing the other interns.&#38;nbsp;
During the video shoot I assisted the crew and was the double body for the model.
